Fresca Original Citrus Review (Soda Tasting #191)

Fresca Original Citrus Review (Soda Tasting #191)

Fresca Original Citrus is a grapefruit flavored zero calorie soda. Fresca was a favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Famously, a million dollar question on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” asked: “For ordering his favorite beverages on demand, LBJ had four buttons installed in the Oval Office labeled ‘coffee,’ ‘tea,’ ‘Coke’ and what?” The answer, which the contestant was not able to provide, was Fresca. I reviewed Mexican Fresca on episode #167 of Soda Tasting. Thank you to mikeypaco […]

Stewart’s Root Beer Review (Soda Tasting #190)

Stewart’s Root Beer Review (Soda Tasting #190)

Ohio schoolteacher Frank Stewart opened his Stewart’s Root Beer stand in 1924.  Stewart’s was only available at root beer stands and drive-in theaters until 1990, when Cable Car Beverage Corporation acquired the bottling rights and began producing 12 ounce bottles of the soda. Triarc (which would later become The Wendy’s Company, as in the fast food restaurant) bought Cable Car Beverage in 1997 and later sold the Stewart’s brand, along with Snapple and Mistic, to Cadbury Schweppes. Eventually, Cadbury Schweppes […]

Pepsi (with Sugar) Review (Soda Tasting #189)

Pepsi (with Sugar) Review (Soda Tasting #189)

In the United States, Pepsi has begun releasing a glass bottle version of the drink, sweetened only with sugar. Though it may taste the same, it is distinctive from Pepsi Throwback in branding and in the fact it comes in a glass bottle, which Throwback does not. I first mentioned this soda on my Pepsi Blind Tasting, where I compared it to the regular high fructose corn syrup and sugar version we have in the U.S. as well as the […]

IBC Root Beer Review (Soda Tasting #187)

IBC Root Beer Review (Soda Tasting #187)

IBC Root Beer was launched in 1919 by the Griesedieck family, who formed with breweries in the St. Louis area as the Independent Breweries Company – which is what IBC stood for. It was developed as a non-alcoholic alternative during prohibition. The Kranzberg family purchased the trademark and increased distribution led to a growth in popularity in the 20s. In the 30s, they sold it to the National Bottling Company. In the 1970s, the drink was bought by Taylor Beverages, […]

The Wizard of Oz Cherry Cola Review (Soda Tasting #186)

Rocket Fizz’s The Wizard of Oz Cherry Cola features artwork that was used for covers of vinyl records from Little Golden Records, which specialized in children’s music. Their releases were distributed by Simon and Schuster, who also published the Little Golden Books series of children’s books at the time. Verse Music Group acquired their catalog in 2011 with plans to issue re-releases. Have you had this soda? Please let me know in the comments. Thank you for watching.
