According to WPIX New York news announcer Larry Mendte, black cherry Wishniak sodas originated in the 1950s with Philadelphia’s Frank’s Beverages. A Wishniak is a cordial, made in Russia and Eastern Europe, that consists of sugar, cherries and vodka. When Frank’s Beverages was looking for new flavors, they came up with a new soda that reminded company president Mulford Frank of the alcoholic beverage. Ohio schoolteacher Frank Stewart opened his Stewart’s Root Beer stand in 1924. Stewart’s was only available at root beer stands and drive-in theaters until 1990, when Cable Car Beverage Corporation acquired the bottling rights and began producing 12 ounce bottles of the soda. IBC Root Beer was launched in 1919 by the Griesedieck family, who formed with breweries in the St. Louis area as the Independent Breweries Company – which is what IBC stood for. It was developed as a non-alcoholic alternative during prohibition. The Kranzberg family purchased the trademark and increased distribution led to a growth in popularity in the 20s.
